Two-Shot Multi-Material Plastic Parts Solution

Two-shot molding, also known as dual-shot or double-shot molding, produces integrated components with two different colors or plastic materials within one continuous molding cycle using rotary precision molds.

Many engineers assume two-shot molding brings higher upfront tooling costs compared to separate molding and assembly. At Runde, our experienced mold design & DFM team optimizes tool structure and material matching to maximize long-term production value. We deliver stable, tight-tolerance multi-material parts for automotive, power tool and consumer hardware projects.

We are not only mold manufacturers but manufacturing problem solvers. We evaluate material compatibility, avoid delamination risks, and balance mold investment against mass production benefits for your project.

How Two-Shot Molding Works

Different from overmolding or manual assembly, two-shot molding ensures precise positioning, strong molecular bonding and consistent mass production results.

Step 1

First Material Injection

The first base material is injected into the mold cavity to form the rigid substrate or primary structure of the component.

Step 2

Mold Rotation

The rotary mold plate precisely rotates 180° to transfer the pre-formed base part to the second cavity position.

Step 3

Second Material Overlay

The second material — either soft TPU/TPE or a different color plastic — is injected and fused tightly with the first substrate.

Step 4

Finished Part Ejection

After cooling and solidification, the integrated dual-material part is ejected with no secondary assembly required.

Material Combinations for Two-Shot Molding

Proper material matching directly determines bonding strength and surface quality. We validate material compatibility in advance to avoid delamination, bubbling or poor adhesion for your 2K projects.

Hard plastic + TPU/TPE

Hard Plastic + TPU / TPE

Most popular combination for anti-slip grips, handles and soft-touch surfaces.

Matching options: ABS+PC, ABS, PP, PA66 + TPU / TPE
Two different rigid plastics

Two Different Rigid Plastics

Dual-color appearance parts without soft-touch function for visual differentiation.

Matching options: ABS+ABS, PC+ABS, PP+PP, PA+GF PA
Transparent + opaque plastic

Transparent + Opaque Material

Indicator windows, light guide structures and decorative transparent sections.

Matching options: PC / PMMA + ABS, PC, PP

Not all plastics are chemically compatible. Send your material specification to our engineering team for free compatibility evaluation before mold design.
