When Overmolding Is Your Ideal Solution

Overmolding creates unified rigid-and-soft plastic assemblies by injecting elastomer materials onto pre-molded plastic substrates. As a flexible molding method, it eliminates tedious manual assembly and produces ergonomic anti-slip surfaces without high-cost rotary molds.

Overmolding Process Flow

Overmolding adopts an independent two-stage molding workflow. After initial substrate production, pre-molded rigid components are transferred and reloaded into a secondary mold to achieve soft-layer integration.

1

Substrate Molding

Rigid plastic base is molded and completed in the first mold set.

2

Inspect & Sort

Finished rigid parts are inspected to ensure no defects before overmolding.

3

Reload Substrate

Qualified bases are manually or robotically placed into the secondary mold.

4

Elastomer Injection

Soft TPE/TPU material is injected to wrap and bond the rigid substrate.

5

Finish & Quality Check

After cooling, integrated soft-rigid parts are demolded and fully inspected.

Overmolding transfers finished substrates between separate molds, which differentiates it fundamentally from rotary two-shot (2K) molding.

Overmolding vs. Insert Molding vs. Two-Shot (2K) Molding

Compare three mainstream multi-material molding technologies to select the right solution for your project.

Comparison Item Overmolding Insert Molding Two-Shot (2K) Molding
Working Principle Pre-mold substrate → secondary injection over surface Place hardware inserts → encapsulate with plastic in one shot Two materials injected sequentially inside one rotary mold
Material Matches Hard plastic + soft elastomer (TPE/TPU) Plastic + metal/terminal/PCB inserts Two compatible plastics, dual-color or dual-hardness
Bonding Method Chemical bonding + mechanical interlock Pure mechanical locking Thermal fusion & chemical adhesion
Tooling Requirement Standard machine, two separate molds Standard machine, single mold Special 2K machine + rotary mold
Relative Mold Cost $$ $ $$$
Cycle Time 30–60s (part transfer needed) 40–90s (affected by insert loading) 20–40s (fully automatic)
Best Production Volume Prototype ~ Medium volume Low ~ High volume Medium ~ High volume
Typical Products Soft-grip handles, sealed wearable housings Automotive connectors, embedded sensor parts Two-tone trim, translucent switches
